Joyce Buckner-Brown has been promoted from interim provost to provost and vice president for academic affairs at Alcorn State University in Mississippi.
Dr. Buckner-Brown brings over two decades of experience in higher education and public health to her new role. Prior to her interim provost appointment, she served as Alcorn’s associate provost for undergraduate education and success.
Before joining the Alcorn community, she spent several years on the faculty at Jackson State University in Mississippi. At Jackson State, she served as a professor and chair of the department of health policy and management. Earlier in her career, she held adjunct teaching appointments at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and Walden University in Minnesota. Outside of academia, she has served as a health scientist with the National Center for Chronic Disease.
Throughout her career, Dr. Buckner-Brown has focused her work on instructional design, teaching, research, program management and evaluation, technical consultation, data collection, synthesis, and dissemination. As a public health scientist, she conducted research on areas such as physical activity and chronic disease prevention and management.
Dr. Buckner-Brown earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from Tougaloo College in Jackson, Mississippi. She holds a master’s degree in health services administration from Mississippi College and a Ph.D. in public administration with an emphasis on health administration from Mississippi State University.
