Bryn Mawr College, the highly selective liberal arts educational institution for women in suburban Philadelphia, has announced the hiring of seven new tenure-track faculty members. Six of the new hires are women.
Michelle Brann is an assistant professor of chemistry. Her research group conducts low-temperature experiments to study how chemical complexity develops in star-forming regions and how organic molecules reach young planets. Dr. Brann holds a bachelor’s degre in chemistry from Wellesley College in Massachusetts. She earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Chicago and conducted postgraduate research at Harvard University, the Smithsonian Institution, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
Marissa Fenley is an assistant professor of theatre. Across her work she asks questions about what exactly makes a person a “person” — and how theater can help us see those questions in new ways. She is completing work on a book entitled Puppet Theory: Dramaturgies of Personhood. Dr. Fenley is a graduate of Lewis and Clark College in Oregon, where she majored in English. She holds a Ph.D. in English and theater and performance studies from the University of Chicago.
Şehrazat G. Mart is an assistant professor of sociology. Her research examines why social movements fracture under repression, focusing on how activists perceive and navigate political risks. She is currently working on a book manuscript, titled At What Cost? The Strategic and Moral Dilemmas of Anti-Authoritarian Struggle. Dr. Mart is a graduate of Bogazici University in Istanbul. She received a master’s degree in sociology and Ph.D. in peace studies and sociology from the University of Notre Dame.
Lauren Pryce McCarthy is an assistant professor of social work. Her research focuses on the intersection of the youth mental health care system and the child welfare system. Dr. Pryce McCarthy’s expertise draws on almost a decade of practice experience working with youth and families in Philadelphia. She earned a master of social work degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland School of Social Work.
Danya Pilgrim is an assistant professor of history. She is a specialist in African American history during the long nineteenth century. Dr. Pilgrim’s current book project explores the ways in which Black food workers utilized different forms of capital in shaping the evolution and development of Philadelphia’s catering trade. Dr. Pilgrim is a graduate of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where she majored in English language and literature. She earned master’s degrees at Wheaton College and the University of Delaware and a Ph.D. in African American and American studies from Yale University.
Clara Stuligross is an assistant professor of biology. She is particularly interested in exploring how pesticide exposure, nutrition, and climate change interact to shape bee responses across multiple biological scales. Dr. Stuligross is a graduate of Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana, where she majored in environmental studies. She earned a Ph.D. in ecology from the University of California, Davis.
