New Administrative Roles for Ten Women at Colleges and Universities

Arwen Staros Duffy has been named vice chancellor for advancement at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Duffy currently serves as assistant vice president for development at the University of Southern California. She will begin her new position on November 15.

Duffy is a graduate of Yale University, where she majored in art. She earned a master of fine arts degree from the California Institute of the Arts.

Deloris M. Gee has been named interim vice provost for strategic planning and institutional effectiveness at North Carolina A&T State University. She has been associate vice chancellor for data governance and intelligence since January 2019.

Gee earned a bachelor’s degree in computer information systems with a business administration concentration from North Carolina Central University. She holds an MBA from the University of Phoenix.

Valoree Vargo was appointed vice president for philanthropy and alumni engagement at Kent State University in Ohio. She will also serve as the executive director of the Kent State University Foundation. She has been serving as interim vice president for more than a year.

Vargo has worked at Kent State University since 2010. She is a graduate of Mount Aloysius College in Cresson, Pennsylvania.

Brittany Straw is the new director of career services at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Straw has been serving as the assistant director of career services at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.

Straw earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in vocational-technical education from Arkansas State University.

Susan Whitmer is the interim medical director for Georgia State University. Dr. Whitmer was a U.S. Navy physician in Iraq. Following her active-duty service, she served in the Navy Reserve while leading outpatient clinic services in Nashville, Tennessee.

Dr. Whitmer earned her medical degree at Emory University in Atlanta. She also holds an MBA from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.

Gay-linn E. Gatewood-Jasho has been promoted to executive director of the  Office of University History, Traditions, and Ceremonials at Clark Atlanta University. She has been serving as senior director of the Office of Alumni Relations. She has been on the staff at the university since 1986.

A native of Kansas City, Missouri, Gatewood-Jasho, is a graduate of what was then Clark College, where she majored in mass communications. She earned a master’s degree in counseling and human development at Clark Atlanta University.

Meredith Stewart was named interim director of human resources at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. She joined Johns Hopkins in 2016 as executive director of Total Rewards, the university’s employee benefits program.

Stewart holds a bachelor’s degree and an MBA from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Tashia L. Bradley was appointed chief operating officer and vice president for administration at Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. Dr. Bradley was the executive vice president at Wilberforce University in Ohio.

Dr. Bradley is a graduate of Florida A&M University. She holds a master’s degree from the University of Kansas and a Ph.D. from Florida State University.

Nicole James Lucas is the new associate vice chancellor for institutional effectiveness, research, and planning at Fayetteville State University in North Carolina. Most recently, Dr. Lucas was the interim director for institutional effectiveness. Earlier, Dr. Lucas served for five years as chair of the sociology department.

Dr. Lucas is a graduate of Oberlin College in Ohio. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Virginia Tech.

Kimberly Hopely will be the next executive vice president for development and alumni engagement at Rutgers University in New Jersey. She will also serve as the president of the Rutgers University Foundation. Hopely will join Rutgers on October 11, after serving as senior vice president and chief development officer at Arizona State University.

Hopely holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in nonprofit studies from Arizona State University.
