Grants or Gifts Relating to Women in Higher Education

Here is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.

Mount Holyoke College, a women’s liberal arts educational institution in South Hadley, Massachusetts, received a capacity-building grant from the Educating Character Initiative at Wake Forest University to support the college’s “Courage and Care in Community” project. The yearlong initiative will explore how Mount Holyoke develops students’ characters to prepare them to become thoughtful leaders and engaged citizens. Through campus assessments across academic and co-curricular experiences, as well as faculty and student partnerships, the project aims to develop recommendations for future character education initiatives, including a new first-year model introducing students to the role of courage and care in education.

A team of researchers at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore has been awarded three six-year grants totaling more than $41 million from the National Institutes of Health to investigate the occurrence of chronic health conditions in men and women living with HIV in the United States. The new funding will support the merger of two longitudinal studies: the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study, an NIH-supported study of gay and bisexual men living with or without HIV that started in 1984, and the Women’s Interagency HIV Study, a similar NIH-supported study of women that began in 1993. The three new grants will fund a clinical research site, a data analysis and sharing site, and a leadership and coordination site.

The University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School has received new funding from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center to support a research initiative centered on improving pregnancy outcomes. With this funding, researchers at the medical school aim to develop artificial intelligence tools that can improve early identification of pregnancy-induced hypertension.
