In Memoriam: Maria Cordis Richey, 1929–2026

Maria Cordis Richey, former president of Georgian Court University in Lakewood, New Jersey, passed away earlier this year. She was 97 years old.

A native of Princeton, New Jersey, Dr. Richey received her bachelor’s degree from what was then Georgian Court College. She went on to receive her master’s and doctoral degrees in medieval and Renaissance literature from Fordham University in New York.

In 1957, Dr. Richey joined the faculty of Georgian Court College, where she would stay for more than five decades. She served as a professor and chair of the English department. In 1974, she was named the college’s sixth president. Under her leadership, Georgian Court established its first master’s degree program, expanded academic offerings, launched coeducational evening undergraduate programs, and approved several new majors. After six years as president, Dr. Richey returned to the classroom and continued to teach until her retirement in 2011.

Five years after her retirement, Georgian Court awarded Dr. Richey an honorary doctor of letters degree. In 2024, the university established the Sister Maria Cordis Richey Center for the Humanities and Creative Arts.
