Four Women Appointed to Dean Positions at Universities

Elisabeth Burgess has joined the faculty at the University of North Georgia as dean of the College of Arts and Letters and professor of sociology. She comes to her new role after 27 years with Georgia State University, where she most recently served as associate dean for faculty affairs in the College of Arts and Sciences. Earlier in her tenure, she was director of the university’s Gerontology Institute.

Dr. Burgess is a graduate of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, where she majored in sociology. She holds a master’s degree and Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Southern California.

Amber Perrell Slack has been named vice president for student affairs and dean of students at Queens University of Charlotte in North Carolina. Her appointment marks a return to the university, where she previously served as associate dean of students for residence life and housing. Currently, she serves as associate vice president of student affairs and dean of students at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Dr. Slack received her bachelor’s degree in political science and government and her master’s degree from Campbell University. She holds a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Sevin Yeltekin has been named dean of the School of Business and professor of finance at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. For the past five years, she has served as dean of the Simon Business School and the Frontier Professor of Business Administration at the University of Rochester in New York. Previously, she was the Rohet Tolani Distinguished Professor of Economics and senior associate dean of education for the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

Dr. Yeltekin is a graduate of Wellesley College in Massachusetts, where she double-majored in economics and mathematics. She holds a master’s degree and Ph.D. in economics from Stanford University.

Amy Nwora has been appointed dean of the College of Education at Niagara University in New York. She has spent the past two decades on the faculty at D’Youville University in Buffalo, New York. Throughout her long tenure, she has served in several capacities, including professor of occupational therapy and health professions education, department chair, and program director.

Dr. Nwora received her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in occupational therapy from D’Youville University. She holds a Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University at Buffalo.

Dr. Howard joins Spelman from Ohio State University, where she has been serving as dean of the College of Engineering. She is a nationally recognized expert in robotics, artificial intelligence, and human-centered technology.
