In Memoriam: Peggy Hedrick Deierhoi, 1934-2024

Peggy Joyce Hedrick Deierhoi, professor emerita of mathematics Georgia Perimeter College, passed away on January 23, 2024. She was 89 years old.

Throughout her career, Deierhoi was dedicated to educating women in STEM fields. She taught at both public and private high schools, as well as universities throughout the southern United States. She taught mathematics at Hermitage High School in Richmond, Virginia, Durham High School in North Carolina, and Girls’ Preparatory School in Chattanooga, Tennessee. At Girls’ Preparatory School, she served has head of the math department and won teacher of the year three times. Her higher education experience included academic appointments at the University of Tennessee and Georgia Perimeter College. After she retired, Deierhoi served the lifelong learning programs at Queens University in Charlotte, North Carolina. and Florida Atlantic University.

As one of only two women math majors in her 1955 graduating class, Deierhoi received her bachelor’s degree from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. She started her graduate studies at Duke University, and went on to earn her master’s degree in education from Georgia State University.

Dr. Howard joins Spelman from Ohio State University, where she has been serving as dean of the College of Engineering. She is a nationally recognized expert in robotics, artificial intelligence, and human-centered technology.
