In Memoriam: Mollie Whalen, 1948-2022

Mollie Whalen, distinguished professor emerita at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania, died on May 24 at her home in San Diego, California. She was 74 years old.

Dr. Whalen grew up in California and attended the University of California, Berkely. She took time off to raise a family and then completed her bachelor’s degree at what is now East Stroudsburg University. She went on to earn a master’s degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey, and her Ph.D. from New York University. While completing her education, Dr. Whalen worked as a clinical psychologist and eventually as director of women’s resources for Monroe County, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Whalen joined the faculty at East Stroudsburg University in 1992. There, she expanded the women’s studies program and served as the director of the Women’s Center. Professor Whalen was the author of Counseling to End Violence Against Women: A Subversive Model (SAGE Publications, 1996).

Dr. Whalen retired from teaching in 2013.
