New Faculty Appointments for a Dozen Women in Academia

LaShanda Korley has been named chair of the department of chemical and biomolecular engineering in the Tandon School of Engineering at New York University. Dr. Korley works at the intersection of chemistry, engineering, and biology, using molecular design to address presssing global engineering challenges. She comes to NYU from the University of Delaware, where she led the Center for Plastics Innovation. Her recent research has centered on how renewable resources such as lignin and citric acid can serve as building blocks for new materials that match or exceed current performance requirements, while also ensuring a secure supply chain and leveraging non-food source competing waste streams.

Dr. Korley earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemical engineering as a dual-degree student between Clark Atlanta University and the Georgia Institute of Technology. She received her Ph.D. in chemical engineering with a concentration in polymer science and technology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Rebecca Dingo was appointed associate dean for faculty in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She currently serves as a professor of English in composition and rhetoric and as a senior fellow and associate director of the university’s Office of Faculty Development. Professor Dingo is the author of Networking Arguments: Rhetoric, Transnational Feminism, and Public Policy Writing (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2012).

Professor Dingo is a graduate of Miami University in Ohio. She holds a master’s degree and Ph.D. in women’s studies and English from Ohio State University.

Lisa Anderson is interim co-director of the School of Social Transformation at Arizona State University. Dr. Anderson is a semiotician whose research focuses on race, gender, and sexuality in culture, specifically in representational arts. Her most recent book is Black Women and the Changing Television Landscape (Bloomsbury, 2023). Earlier in her tenure at Arizona State, she was associate dean of academic affairs for the Graduate College.

Dr. Anderson holds a bachelor’s degree in politics from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, a master’s degree in theatre from Smith College in Massachusetts, and a Ph.D. in theatre history and criticism from the University of Washington.

Sherry Barrett is a new professor of practice in privacy and cybersecurity informatics in the College of Information Sciences and Technology at Pennsylvania State University. Professor Barrett is a senior intelligence analyst, former federal law enforcement officer, and cybersecurity professional whose career spans three decades at the intersection of law, intelligence, and emerging technology. Her expertise spans traditional and digital investigative techniques, blockchain and cryptocurrency forensics, financial crimes analysis, open-source intelligence, and the legal and constitutional frameworks governing digital evidence.

Professor Barrett holds a juris doctorate from DePaul College of Law in Chicago.

Jennifer L. Brinkley is a new assistant professor of law at the University of Dayton School of Law in Ohio. She comes to her new role from the University of West Florida, where she taught in the legal studies pre-law program. Prior to joining academia, Brinkley worked at a firm in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and then as a solo practitioner, focusing on family law and criminal defense. She then served as an Assistant Warren County Attorney, prosecuting criminal cases, child support, guardianship cases, and juvenile offenses.

Brinkley received her bachelor’s degree in broadcasting and her master’s degree in criminology from Western Kentucky University. She earned her juris doctorate from the University of Kentucky.

Sonia M. Gipson Rankin has been named interim associate dean for technology and innovation at the North Carolina Central University School of Law. Before joining the university in August, Professor Gipson Rankin taught at the University of New Mexico School of Law. She previously served six years as associate dean of University College and three years as associate director of the Africana studies program at the University of New Mexico. With academic training in both computer science and law, Professor Gipson Rankin’s work focuses on technology, artificial intelligence, and their implications for the legal profession and justice system.

Professor Gipson Rankin holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Morgan State University in Baltimore and a juris doctorate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Yiwei Lyu has joined the faculty of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh as an assistant teaching professor in the School of Architecture. Lyu’s teaching and research focus on building technology, architectural simulation, and carbon-aware design, exploring how computational tools and environmental science can empower architects to build resilient, sustainable environments.

Lyu holds dual bachelor’s degrees in architecture and mathematics from the University of Southern California and a master’s degree in architectural studies and building technology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is currently completing a doctorate at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Lyrric Jackson has been appointed director of Spelman College’s professional dance company, the Spelman Dance Theater. Jackson is a lecturer in the department of dance performance and choreography at the women’s college, where she teaches courses in contemporary modern dance. She also serves as the arts education coordinator for dance at the Fulton County Southwest Arts Center.

Jackson earned her bachelor’s degree in drama and dance from Spelman College. She holds a master’s degree in arts administration and a master of fine arts degree from the Savannah College of Art & Design in Georgia.

Bianca Montrosse-Moorhead has been named head of the department of educational psychology at the University of Connecticut’s Neag School of Education. A faculty member since 2013, Dr. Montrosse-Moorhead previously served as coordinator of the department’s research methods, measurement, and evaluation programs. As a scholar, she specializes in evaluation methodology, theory, practice, and capacity building.

Dr. Montrosse-Moorhead is a graduate of the University of South Carolina, where she majored in psychology. She holds a master’s degree in psychology with a concentration in evaluation and organizational behavior and a Ph.D. in psychology with a concentration in evaluation and research methods from Claremont Graduate University in California.

Gabrielle String is an inaugural faculty member of the new Infectious Disease Research Cluster in the College of Health at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. Dr. String is an assistant professor at the university, holding joint appointments in the department of population health and the department of environmental engineering. As an environmental health engineer, she aims to close critical efficacy and effectiveness evidence gaps for water, sanitation, and hygiene in humanitarian and development contexts.

A graduate of Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York, Dr. String earned her master’s degree and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Tufts University in Massachusetts.

Nancy Brooker is chair of the biology, chemistry, and physics departments at Pittsburg State University in Kansas. Dr. Brooker’s career has spanned higher education, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, quality assurance, and research, with leadership positions at organizations including Bayer, Dow, Abbott Laboratories, and Recursion Pharmaceuticals.

Dr. Brooker is an alumna of Pittsburg State University, where she majored in biology, microbiology, and biochemistry. She holds a master’s degree from the University of Arkansas and a Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Anne Rimoin was named associate dean of global health in the Fielding School of Public Health at the University of California, Los Angeles. A professor in the school’s department of epidemiology, Dr. Rimoin holds the Gordon-Levin Endowed Chair in Infectious Diseases and Public Health. She is also director of the university’s Center for Global Health Security and founding director of the UCLA-DRC Health Research and Training Program in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Dr. Rimoin is a graduate of Middlebury College in Vermont. She holds a master of public health degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
