New Deans Are Named at Eight Colleges and Universities

Dean and faculty member of the College of Osteopathic Medicine aJane E. Carreiro was appointed dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine at the University of New England in Biddleford, Maine. She has been serving as director of graduate and continuing medical education at the university. Dr. Carreiro is a professor and chair of the department of osteopathic manipulative medicine at the University of New England. She has been on the faculty at the university for 23 years.

Dr. Carreiro is the author of An Osteopathic Approach to Children (Churchill Livingstone, 2009 2nd edition) and Pediatric Manual Medicine: An Osteopathic Approach (Churchill Livingstone, 2009).

Studio Portraits MC-00854 Sara RosenSara Rosen was named dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Georgia State University in Atlanta. Since 2011, he has been serving as senior vice provost for academic affairs at the University of Kansas. She has been at the University of Kansas for 25 years.

Dr. Rosen holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She earned a Ph.D. in linguistics and cognitive science from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts.

bertonazziLaura Bertonazzi was promoted to dean of undergraduate admission and retention at Regis College in Weston, Massachusetts. Since 2014, she has served as associate dean of students. She joined the staff at Regis College in 2003.

Dr. Bertonazzi was the valedictorian of the Class of 2003 at Regis College. She earned a master’s degree in justice studies from Suffolk University in Boston and an educational doctorate at the University of New England.

pat_okkerPatricia A. Okker will serve as interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Missouri. She is a senior associate provost at the university. Dr. Okker joined the faculty at the university in 1990 and was promoted to full professor in 2004. She chaired the department of English from 2005 to 2011.

Professor Okker is the author of Our Sister Editors: Sarah J. Hale and the Tradition of Nineteenth-Century Women Editors (University of Georgia Press, 1995) and Social Stories: The Magazine Novel in Nineteenth-Century America (University of Virginia Press, 2003). She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois.

SharonwalkerSharon Walker was appointed interim dean of the Bourns College of Engineering at the University of California, Riverside. She is holds the John Babbage Chair in Environmental Engineering and has been serving as associate dean for student academic affairs. Professor Walker joined the faculty at the university in 2005.

Dr. Walker is a graduate of the University of Southern California. She earned a master’s degree in chemical and environmental engineering and a Ph.D. in environmental engineering from Yale University.

paulaoloughlinPaula O’Loughlin was named dean of the faculty and provost at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She has been serving as associate provost and dean of arts and humanities at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota. Before joining the staff at Gustavous Adolphus College in 2012, she served on the political science faculty at the University of Minnesota at Morris.

Dr. O’Loughlin is a graduate of Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, where she majored in government. She holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Minnesota.

Jones-JohnsonGloria Jones-Johnson was appointed interim dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro. She was a professor of sociology at Iowa State University, where she also served as director of the women’s and gender studies program.

Dr. Jones-Johnson is a graduate of Talladega College in Alabama. She holds a master’s degree from Bowling Green State University in Ohio and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.

burkeIngrid C. Burke was named the next dean of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, effective October 1. Dr. Burke has been serving as director of the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources and holds the Wyoming Excellence Chair of Ecology at the University of Wyoming. She has been at the University of Wyoming since 2008 after teaching at Colorado State University.

Dr. Burke is a graduate of Middlebury College in Vermont, where she majored in biology. She holds a Ph.D. in botany from the University of Wyoming.

Caroline Attardo Genco Named the First Woman President of the University at Buffalo

Dr. Geneco comes to her new role from Tufts University in Massachusetts, where she has served as provost for the past four years. She is slated become the University at Buffalo's first woman president on August 10.
