Washington University in St. Louis Promotes Two Women to Key Administrative Positions

Washington University in St. Louis has announced the appointment of two women to major administrative positions.

Jennifer R. Smith was named dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Smith is an associate professor of earth and planetary sciences at the university. She joined the university’s faculty in 2002 and was promoted to associate professor in 2009. Prior to coming to St. Louis, she was a lecturer in the department of anthropology at Harvard University.

Dr. Smith is a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard University. She earned a master’s degree in geology in 1998 and a Ph.D. in earth and environmental science in 2001, both from the University of Pennsylvania.

Sharon Stahl was promoted to the post of vice chancellor for students. She was associate vice chancellor for students and dean of the First Year Center at the university. She will continue in her role as senior associate dean of the university’s College of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Stahl has been with the university since 1988.

Dr. Stahl is a graduate of the University of Missouri at Columbia. She earned a Ph.D. in history from St. Louis University.

Both appointments are effective July 1.
