Katrina Spencer has been named vice president for finance, chief financial officer, and treasurer for Yale University. Spencer comes to the Ivy League university from Rice University in Houston, Texas, where she serves as chief financial officer and treasurer. Earlier, she was deputy chief financial officer at the University of Colorado Boulder. Spencer’s extensive background in higher education financial management also include prior leadership posts with the University of Chicago, the University of Connecticut, and the University of California, Berkeley. Spencer is a graduate of Brigham Young University in Utah, where she majored in history. She holds a master of public administration degree with a focus on economics from Columbia University in New York City.
In a joint message, Yale’s President Maurie McInnis, and Geoff Chatas, senior vice president for operations, wrote, “Katrina’s experience will serve Yale well as we continue to strengthen the university’s financial stewardship and support our academic mission. We are confident she will be an outstanding partner to colleagues across the university and a valuable member of the Operations leadership team.”
Following one year of interim service, Kerry Bierman has been officially appointed vice chancellor of finance and chief financial officer at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Bierman has served in other leadership roles at the university, including senior associate vice chancellor in the Office of Budget and Planning and CFO for the university’s design, facility, and safety services division. Previously, she worked for the County of Santa Barbara as the CFO for the Distict Attorney’s Office and for the Community Services Department. Earlier, she was director of budget and financial planning at Oregon Health & Science University.
“Kerry brings to this role more than two decades of financial leadership experience across higher education, government, and the private sector, including nine years at UC Santa Barbara,” said Chancellor Dennis Assanis. “She has a broad portfolio of financial management experience, a deep operational understanding of our university, and a strong commitment to the principles of transparency and shared governance. She will be a strategic leader and partner for our campus as we chart our path forward.”

“Amy is a brilliant marketer, communicator and strategist,” said Nichol Luoma, executive vice chancellor of enterprise operations and chief operating officer. “I’m excited about what she’ll bring to connecting our story across WashU and WashU Medicine in a way we haven’t done before, building on an incredible foundation.”
