Four Women Named to Endowed Chairs at the University of Chicago

The University of Chicago has announced that 13 faculty members have received appointments to named professorships. Four of the 13 appointments to named chairs went to women.

Holly J. Humphrey, Frances Ferguson, Kathleen D. Morrison, and Ayelet Fishbach

Holly J. Humphrey was appointed the Ralph W. Gerard Professor in Medicine in the division of Biological Sciences. She also serves as dean for medical education at the university. In this role, she oversees medical education for students in the Pritzker School of Medicine and for residents and fellows in graduate medical education programs at The University of Chicago Medical Center. She earned her medical degree at the University of Chicago.

Frances Ferguson was named the Ann L. and Lawrence B. Buttenwieser Professor in English Language & Literature and the College. She previously taught at Johns Hopkins University and the University of California at Berkeley, where she was one of the founders of the women’s studies program. She is the author of Pornography, the Theory: What Utilitarianism Did to Action (University of Chicago Press, 2004) and Solitude and the Sublime: Romanticism and the Aesthetics of Individuation (Routledge, 1992).

Professor Ferguson is a graduate of Wellesley College. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Yale University.

Kathleen D. Morrison was appointed the Neukom Family Professor in Anthropology and the College. Her current research is focused on the causes and consequences of agrarian reform in southern India. She has been on the faculty of the University of Chicago since 1996. She previously taught at Northwestern University and the University of Hawaii.

Professor Morrison is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame. She earned a master’s degree at the University of New Mexico and a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of California at Berkeley.

Ayelet Fishbach was named the Jeffrey Breakenridge Keller Professor of Behavioral Science and Marketing. She has been a member of the faculty at the university’s Booth School of Business since 2002.

Dr. Fishbach holds bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in psychology from Tel Aviv University in Israel. She did postdoctoral research at the University of Maryland.
