Rowena M. Tomaneng has been selected as the next president of San JoseÌ City College in California. She will assume her new duties on January 6.
San JoseÌ City College enrolls more than 9,200 students, according to the latest data supplied to the U.S. Department of Education. Women make up 55 percent of the student body at the community college.
“I’m very excited to be joining San JoseÌ City College. SJCC is well-known throughout the state as one of the strongest and most innovative community colleges in California,” Dr. Tomaneng said. “I look forward to working closely with my new colleagues among the administration, faculty, and classified professionals to continue to move the institution forward and find new and innovative ways to serve our students and our community.”
A first-generation immigrant from the Philippines, Dr. Tomaneng has been an educator in the California Community College system for nearly 25 years, serving most recently as president of Berkeley City College. She was appointed to that post in 2016. Earlier she was a tenured faculty member at De Anza College in Cupertino, California. There, she also held several administrative posts including associate vice president of instruction, dean of language arts, and director of the Institute of Community and Civic Engagement.
Dr. Tomaneng is a graduate of the University of California, Irvine, where she majored in English. She holds a master’s degree in English from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and an educational doctorate from the University of San Francisco.
