Six Women Scholars Appointed to Endowed Faculty Chairs

April Hill has been named the inaugural Wagener Family Professor of Equity and Inclusion in STEM at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. She was a professor of biology at the University of Richmond in Virginia.

Dr. Hill holds a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from the University of North Texas and a Ph.D. in human genetics from the University of Houston.

Tina Nabatchi has been named the inaugural Joseph A. Straser Endowed Professor in Public Administration at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University in New York. She has been a faculty member at the Maxwell School since 2007.

Dr. Nabatichi holds a Ph.D. from Indiana University, Bloomington.

Jennifer Hurley has been named the Richard Baruch M.D. Career Development Professor of Biological Science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. She has served as an assistant professor of biology at the university for the past three years.

Dr. Hurley holds a bachelor’s degree in molecular biology and politics from Juniata College in Huntington, Pennsylvania, and a Ph.D. in molecular genetics, microbiology and immunology from Rutgers University.

Sabriya Rice has been named to the Knight Chair of Health and Medical Journalism at the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia. She was the business of health care reporter for the Dallas Morning News.

Rice holds a bachelor’s degree in film and television from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana and a master’s degree in communication studies from the University of Miami in Florida.

Shawon Kinew has been named a Shutzer Assistant Professor at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University. Additionally, she has been appointed as an assistant professor in the department of history of art and architecture. She was a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University.

Dr. Kinew holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Toronto and a master’s degree and Ph.D. from Harvard University.

Kelly Chong has been appointed the 2018-2019 Paul Gibbons Roofe and Helen Waddle Roofe Professorship in Sociology at the University of Kansas. She currently serves as associate chair of the sociology department and joined the university’s faculty in 2004.

Dr. Chong holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Cornell University, a master’s degree in East Asian studies from the University of Illinois and a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Chicago.
