Vera Schwarcz, the Mansfield Freeman Professor of East Asian Studies at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, has retired. She joined the faculty at the university in 1975. A native of Romania, Professor Schwarcz is the author of many books including Bridge Across Broken Time: Chinese and Jewish Cultural Memory (Yale University Press, 1999).
Dr. Schwarcz is a graduate of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. She holds master’s degrees from Wesleyan University and Yale University and a Ph.D. from Stanford University.
Lorrie Shepard, dean of the School of Education at the University of Colorado at Boulder, announced that she will be stepping down as dean on May 31, 2016. She will remain at the university as a Distinguished Professor of research and evaluation methodology. Dr. Shepard has been on the faculty at the university for 41 years and has been dean since 2001.
Dr. Shepard is a graduate of Pomona College in Claremont, California. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in research and evaluation methodology from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Amelia Ross-Hammond, a professor and director of service-learning and civic engagement at Norfolk State University in Virginia, is retiring from the university on June 30. She will continue to serve as a member of the Virgina Beach City Council.
A native of Liberia, Dr. Ross Hammond came to the United States in 1980. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Ithaca College in New York and a master’s degree in music education from The College of New Jersey. She earned a doctorate in educational leadership, curriculum and instruction and ethnomusicology from the University of Denver.
Karen Wiley Sandler, the Albert and Suzanne Lord Chancellor of the Abington campus of Pennsylvania State University, has announced that she will step down on December 31, 2015. She has led the Abington campus since 1994. Earlier in her career, Chancellor Sandler held administrative posts at Juniata College and Gettysburg College, both in Pennsylvania, and at the University of Vermont.
Dr. Sandler earned a master’s degree at Pennsylvania State University and a doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania.
Shauna R. King, vice president for finance and business operations at Yale University, will leave her post on August 31. She has served in her present role for the past nine years. Before joining the staff at Yale, King held several executive posts at PepsiCo.
King earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, and an MBA in accounting and finance from Cornell University.
Sarah A. McIntire was named chair and professor emerita of biology at Texas Woman’s University in Denton. Her research focused on the study of the role of plasmid DNA as it relates to ulcers and gastritis.
Professor McIntire holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in zoology from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She earned a Ph.D. in microbiology at the University of Cincinnati.
Professor Emerson joined the faculty at Princeton in 1988. She is a graduate of Cornell University, where she majored in Russian literature. Dr. Emerson earned a master’s degree in Russian studies at Harvard University and a Ph.D. in comparative literature from the University of Texas at Austin.
Magda Peck, the founding dean of the Joseph J. Zilber School of Public Health at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, is stepping down from the post on July 1. She plans on staying in Milwaukee as a consultant on health issues and leadership development.
Dr. Peck is a graduate of Hahnemann University in Philadelphia. She holds master’s and doctoral degrees from the School of Public Health at Harvard University.
Hannah Arterian, professor and dean of the College of Law at Syracuse University in New York, announced that she will leave her post on August 1. She has been dean since 2002. Professor Arterian will take some time to conduct research and write before returning to her full-time faculty post at the law school.
Professor Arterian is a magna cum laude graduate of Elmira College in New York. She earned her law degree at the University of Iowa.
Since 2021, Dr. Raver has been serving as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. She will begin her new duties at the University of Michigan on December 1.
Dr. Rhine comes to her new presidency with nearly four decades of leadership experience in higher education. Most recently, she was president and chief executive officer of Yavapai College in Prescott, Arizona.
On August 10, Dr. Bloebaum became the chief academic officer at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. She had been serving as dean of the College of Aeronautics and Engineering at Kent State University in Ohio for the past eight years.
Dr. Barkley is slated to become the first woman president of Spoon River College on August 31. She comes to her new role from John Wood Community College in Quincy, Illinois, where she serves as vice president of academic and student affairs.
Dr. Konan, a professor of economics and dean of the College of Social Sciences at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, has been selected to serve as the university's interim provost. A faculty member for more than 30 years, she previously served as interim chancellor.
