Oregon State’s Jane Lubchenco Wins the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement

Jane Jane-lubchencoLubchenco, a Distinguished Professor in marine science at Oregon State University, has been selected to receive the 2015 John and Alice Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement. Established in 1972, the prize is administered by the University of Southern California. John Tyler was the founder of the Farmers Insurance Group.

Tyler PrizeProfessor Lubchenco was “recognized for effective and valiant public leadership to sustain our global ocean commons and for her inspired work in education, mentorship, science communication, and science policy.” She will receive a $100,000 cash prize and a gold medallion.

Professor Lubchenco is a graduate of Colorado College and holds a master’s degree in zoology from the University of Washington and a Ph.D. in marine ecology from Harvard University. From 2009 to 2013, she served as director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. She was the first woman to hold the post.
