The University of Houston School of Art has announced seven faculty appointments. Housed within the Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts, the school annually accepts 15 students to pursue master’s degrees in its three-year program. Each student receives a $20,000 package per year for tuition and expenses and a guaranteed on-campus job.
“The University of Houston School of Art sits at the heart of Houston’s art culture, and these appointments represent Houston’s talents and ensure our continuing excellence,” said Beth Merfish, director of the School of Art. “Each of these artists and educators brings a distinct vision, a dynamic practice, and a deep commitment to students matched by our financial commitment to these emerging artists.”
Four of the new faculty members are women.
Angela Lynn Tucker was named assistant professor of photo and video. Her work in photography and moving image explores representation, memory, narrative, and lived experience through documentary and experimental approaches. Tucker previously directed a documentary about Houstonian Barbara Jordan, a former Texas State Senator and U.S. Congresswoman. Tucker is a graduate of Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. She earned a master of fine arts degree in film from Columbia University in New York City.
Maisie Luo was appointed an assistant professor of painting. She is an artist and writer whose practice spans painting, painted animation, and installation. Her work explores the relationships among humans, animals, and the environment. Liu is a graduate of Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, where she majored in studio art and religion. She holds a master’s degree in theological studies from Harvard Divinity School and a master of fine arts degree from Rutgers University in New Jersey.
Ella Rosenblatt is a new assistant professor of graphic design. She is an artist, designer, writer, and educator whose work focuses on language, translation, and communication across media, often addressing contemporary technologies, posthumanism, and environmental conditions. Rosenblatt is a graduate of Brown University, where she majored in history of art & architecture and science, technology & society. She holds a master of fine arts degree in graphic design and integrated media from the California Institute of the Arts.
Erin Miller is a professor of practice in printmaking. She is an accomplished printmaker and educator whose practice emphasizes technical rigor, collaborative learning, and experimentation across traditional and contemporary print processes. Earlier in her career, Miller taught at the University of Texas at Austin. She earned a master of fine arts degree from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.
