A Trio of Women Who Have Been Named Recipients of Notable Awards

Noel Schulz, the Paslay Professor of Electric and Computer Engineering and the associate dean for research and graduate programs in the College of Engineering at Kansas State University, has been selected to receive the 2014 Hewlett-Packard Harriet B. Rigas Award from the Education Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. She will be presented with the award in October at the Frontiers in Education Conference in Madrid, Spain. She is being honored for her efforts to recruit and retain women in electrical engineering.
Professor Schulz has served on the faculty at Kansas State since 2009. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degree from Virginia Tech and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Minnesota.
Julie D. Goodwin, who has served as general counsel at Morgan State University in Baltimore since 1992, received the Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of College and University Attorneys. Goodwin has been a member of NACUA since 1985 and served on its board of directors.
Goodwin is a graduate of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and the University of Maryland School of Law, where she was an assistant editor of the Maryland Law Review.
Judith Mercer, clinical professor emerita of nursing at the University of Rhode Island, received the Hattie Hemschemeyer Award from the American College of Nurse-Midwives at the association’s annual meeting in Denver, Colorado. Professor Mercer served on the faculty at Georgetown University for 15 years before joining the faculty at the University of Rhode Island in 1998. She retired from teaching in 2007 and now concentrates on research.
Dr. Mercer holds a Ph.D. from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
