Two Women Honored as Distinguished Professors at the University of Connecticut

The board of trustees of the University of Connecticut has named three faculty members Distinguished Professor, the highest faculty honor bestowed by the university. The faculty members are honored for exceptional distinction in scholarship, teaching, and service to the university. Two of three new Distinguished Professors are women.

Nancy A. Naples is a professor of sociology and the director of the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality studies program at the university. Dr. Naples has been at the University of Connecticut since 2001. Previously, she taught at the University of California at Irvine, Iowa State University, and SUNY Westbury. She is the author of Feminism and Method: Ethnography, Discourse Analysis, and Activist Research (Routledge, 2003) and the co-editor of the forthcoming Border Politics: Social Movements, Collective Identities and Globalization (New York University Press, 2014). Professor Naples holds a master’s degree from New York University and a master of social work degree and a Ph.D. in sociology from the City University of New York.

Kathleen Segerson is a professor of economics at the University of Connecticut. For the past five years, she was the inaugural holder of the Philip E. Austin Endowed Chair at the university. Professor Segerson focuses her research on environmental and natural resource economics. She has been on the university’s faculty since 1986 and served as chair of the economics department from 2001 to 2005. Dr. Segerson is the editor of The Economics of Pollution Control (Edward Elgar Publishing, 2010) and Economics and Liability for Environmental Problems (Ashgate Publishing, 2002). Professor Segerson is a graduate of Dartmouth College and holds a Ph.D. from Cornell University.
