Grants or Gifts Relating to Women in Higher Education

money_bag_clip_art_23184Here is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.

California State University, Long Beach received three grants that will be used to encourage young girls to consider studying in the field of engineering. One program, funded by a grant from the Chancellor’s Office of the California Community College system will sponsor a one-week academic program in the summer for girls in the fifth or sixth grade.

A second program entitled “My Daughter Is an Engineer,” bring fifth grade girls and their parents to campus for a robot building program. This program is funded by a grant from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

A third program, funded by a grant from the California Space Grant Consortium, brings K-12 educators to campus to learn best practices for encouraging girls to consider engineering.

dubowWilliams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, received a $188,200 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support two research projects on reproductive and sexual politics. The grants will fund research by associate professor of history Sara Dubow on projects entitled, “From Conscience Clauses to Conscience Wars: The History and Politics of Refusal, 1973-2012” and “At the Heart of Liberty: A History of Gender, Sexuality, and the Fourteenth Amendment.”
