Two Women Appointed to Named Professorships at the University of Chicago

The University of Chicago has announced that fourteen faculty members have been named to endowed chairs. Only one of these 14 faculty members is a woman.

mcnallyElizabeth McNally was appointed the A. J. Carlson Professor of Medicine and Human Genetics. She also serves as director of the Institute for Cardiovascular Research and the Cardiovascular Genetics Clinic at the university. She has served on the faculty at the University of Chicago since 1996.

Dr. McNally is a past president of the American Society for Clinical Investigation. She is a graduate of Barnard College and holds a medical degree and a Ph.D. from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.

In addition, six faculty members were named Distinguished Service Professors. One of the six is a woman.

bertrandMarianne Bertrand was named the Chris P. Dialynas Distinguished Service Professor of Economics. Her research focuses on labor economics, corporate finance, and developmental economics. Professor Bertrand is co-director of the university’s Social Enterprise Initiative and serves as co-editor of the American Economic Review.

Before coming to the University of Chicago in 2000, Professor Bertrand taught at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University.

A native of Belgium, Dr. Bertrand holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Free University of Brussels. She earned a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University.
