Three Women Appointed to Leadership Roles at the University of South Florida College of Public Health

The University of South Florida has announced the promotions of several faculty members to leadership roles in the College of Public Health (COPH). Three of these appointments went to women.

Jamie Corvin, professor of global, environmental, and genomic health sciences, was named senior associate dean for academic and student affairs. A faculty member since 2006, Dr. Corvin has held several leadership roles with the college, including associate dean for academic affairs and director of the master of public health degree program. Her areas of research include global maternal and child health issues, global health disparities, disaster management, humanitarian assistance, organizational culture, and organizational collaboration.

“Dr. Corvin is a highly respected leader, educator and scholar who has made significant contributions to the COPH,” said Sten Vermund, dean of the college. “Throughout her career, she has demonstrated a strong commitment to student success, academic innovation, and public health practice.”

A graduate of Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, Dr. Corvin holds a master’s degree in public health and a Ph.D. in community and family health from the University of South Florida.

Tricia Penniecook, associate professor of community health sciences, was named director of the Center for Leadership in Public Health Practice. Dr. Penniecook, who joined the faculty in 2016, has been serving as the college’s vice dean for faculty and global affairs and as chair of the Council on Education for Public Health reaccreditation process. Before coming to the University of South Florida, Dr. Penniecook served as vice president of academic administration at Oakwood University in Alabama. Earlier, she was the first Afro-Latina to serve as dean of the School of Public Health at Loma Linda University in California. With more than two decades of experience as a physician, educator, and public health administrator, Dr. Penniecook currently centers her work on the development of health professionals.

“I am pleased that Dr. Penniecook will continue her commitment to leadership development in her new role,” said Dr. Vermund. “With her extensive experience in leadership, public health practice, and organizational excellence, she is exceptionally well positioned to guide the center’s continued growth and expand opportunities for leadership training.”

Dr. Penniecook received her master of public health degree and her medical degree from the University of Montemorelos in Mexico.

Ellen Daley, professor of community health sciences, was named the inaugural vice dean for research and faculty. Dr. Daley joined the University of South Florida faculty full-time in 2003, after several years of teaching as an adjunct instructor. She has served in various leadership roles with the COPH, most recently as senior associate dean for research and practice and director of the Lawton and Rhea Chiles Center for Women, Children, and Families. Earlier, she was chair of the college’s research committee and co-director of the Center for Transdisciplinary Research in Women’s Health. As a behavioral health researcher, Dr. Daley specializes in women’s health, adolescent health, sexuality education, STD prevention, and contraceptive use.

“Dr. Daley’s vision and experience will be invaluable as we continue to grow and nurture a strong and productive faculty, increase our research portfolio, and foster interdisciplinary collaboration across the college,” said Dr. Vermund.

Dr. Daley earned her bachelor’s degree in health from the State University of New York at Fredonia. She holds a master of public health degree in population planning from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. in public health from the University of South Florida.
