Miya Qiong Xie Wins First Book Prize From the Modern Language Association

Miya Qiong Xie, associate professor of Chinese and comparative East Asian literature at Dartmouth College, has received the Modern Language Association Prize for a First Book for her monograph, Territorializing Manchuria: The Transnational Frontier and Literatures of East Asia (Harvard University Asia Center, 2023).

The award-winning publication examines how the once-contested Northeast Asian frontier of Manchuria played a significant role in the formation and problematization of national literatures in multiple countries in East Asia. In addition to its recent recognition from the Modern Langauge Association, Territorializing Manchuria also received the First Book Award from the Weatherhead East Asian Institute at Columbia University.

A Dartmouth faculty member since 2017, Dr. Xie currently teaches in the department of Asian societies, cultures, and languages and the comparative literature program. Her research focuses on modern Chinese, Korean, and Japanese literatures. She is currently working on a new book project regarding literature, sexual violence, and trauma in contemporary East Asia.

Dr. Xie received her bachelor’s degree in Korean language and culture and her master’s degree in African and Asian languages and literatures from Peking University in Beijing, China. She holds a second master’s degree in literary studies from Leiden University in the Netherlands and a Ph.D. in comparative literature from Harvard University.
