National Institute for Pharmaceutical Technology and Education Awards Its Highest Honor to Diane Burgess

Diana Burgess, longtime leader with the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy, has received the David J. W. Grant Distinguished Scholar Award from the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Technology and Education. The award is the organization’s highest honor, presented annually to a scholar who has made outstanding scientific achievements in pharmaceutical research.

For the past 30 years, Dr. Burgess has been a faculty member with the School of Pharmacy at the University of Connecticut. She currently serves as the Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor of Pharmaceutics and the Pfizer Distinguished Endowed Chair in Pharmaceutical Technology. Her accomplishments as an educator have earned her the university’s Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award on two separate occasions.

Throughout her career, Dr. Burgess has focused her research on the formulation science, drug delivery, and manufacturing science of complex parenterals. She has authored nearly 300 scholarly publications and developed 10 United States patents for various pharmaceutical delivery and manufacturing processes. She is a fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, the Controlled Release Society, the Academy of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, and the National Academy of Inventors.

Dr. Burgess holds a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from the University of Strathclyde in the United Kingdom and a Ph.D. in pharmaceutics from the University of London.
