Michaele Whelan Will Be the Ninth President of Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts

Michaele Whelan has been selected as the ninth president of Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts. She will take office in January.

Wheaton College enrolls just under 1,700 students according to the most recent data available from the U.S. Department of Education. Women make up 60 percent of the student body.

“I’m deeply honored to be chosen to lead Wheaton as its ninth president,” Dr. Whelan said. “The college’s distinctive combination of rigorous liberal arts and experiential learning in an innovative, student-centered environment is inspiring. Wheaton is renowned for its high-quality academics and immersive education, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to build on its past successes and contribute to its bright future.”

Since 2013, Dr. Whelan has been provost at Emerson College in Boston. Earlier in her career, she was vice provost for academic affairs at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, associate dean of academic planning and innovation in the Schools of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, and assistant director of undergraduate studies in the department of English and American literature at Harvard University.

Dr. Whelan is the author of Travel Implies Destination (Aracne Publishers, 2010) and Navigating the Minefield: Hawkes’s Narratives of Perversion Theory (Peter Lang Publishers, 1998). She holds a bachelor’s degree in English and American literature from Cornell University and a Ph.D. in English and American literature from Harvard University.
