Seven Women Scholars Appointed to Positions as Deans

Amy Jasperson is the new dean for faculty development at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Jasperson has been on the faculty at the college since 2012. She is an associate professor and chair of the political science department. From 1999 to 2012, she taught at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Dr. Jasperson is a magna cum laude graduate of Wellesley College in Massachusetts, where she double majored in art history and political science. She holds a Ph.D. in politics from the University of Minnesota.

Andrea D. Jackson was appointed dean of the College of Dentistry at Howard University in Washington, D.C. The college is the fifth oldest dental school in the United States. Dr. Jackson has served as interim dean of the College of Dentistry since July 2018. Earlier, she was associate dean of clinical affairs and professor and chair of the department of prosthodontics. She has served on the Howard University faculty for the past 30 years.

Dr. Jackson hold s a bachelor’s degree in zoology and a doctor of dental surgery degree from Howard University. She also holds a master’s degree in prosthodontics from Georgetown University.

Ida M. Moore is the new dean of the College of Nursing at the University of Arizona. She has served in the post on an interim basis for the past 10 months. Dr. Moore has been on the faculty at the university since 1988 and currently is the Anne Furrow Endowed Professor at the college and a long-standing member of the University of Arizona Cancer Center.

Dr. Moore holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing from the University of Iowa. She earned a Ph.D. in nursing at the University of California, San Francisco.

Jean Harvey has been named interim dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the University of Vermont. She currently serves as professor and chair of the department of nutrition and food science and as associate dean for research. She has been a faculty member at the university since 1991.

Dr. Harvey holds a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree both in nutrition from Pennsylvania State University. She holds a master’s degree in epidemiology from the University of Pittsburgh.

Lily T. Garcia has been named dean of the School of Dental Medicine at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She currently serves as associate dean for education at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics.

Dr. Garcia is a graduate of the University of Texas. She holds a doctor of dental surgery degree from Baylor University and a master’s degree in prosthodontics from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

Gillian R. Hayes has been named vice provost for graduate education and dean of the Graduate Division at the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Hayes has been a member of the faculty since 2007 and currently holds the Robert A. and Barbara L. Kleist Chair in Informatics. She also has joint appointments in the School of Education and the School of Medicine.

Dr. Hayes is a cum laude graduate of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, where she double-majored in computer science and mathematics. She holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Lisandra R. Carmichael has been named dean of University Libraries at Georgia Southern University. She most recently served as the interim and associate dean of the library at the University of North Florida.

Dr. Carmichael is a graduate of the University of Puerto Rico where she majored in English literature. She holds a master’s degree in library sciences and learning technologies from the University of Missouri and a Ph.D. from Florida State University.
