Three Women Named to Distinguished Service Professorships at the University of Chicago

Margaret Gardel has been named the Horace B. Horton Professor in the department of physics. She has been a faculty member at the University of Chicago since 2007.

Dr. Gardel holds a bachelor’s degree in physics and mathematics from Brown University and a Ph.D. in physics from Harvard University.

Elisabeth Clemens has been named the William Rainey Harper Distinguished Service Professor in the department of sociology. She joined the faculty at the university in 2002.

Dr. Clemens holds a bachelor’s degree in social studies from Harvard University, and a master’s degree and Ph.D. both in sociology from the University of Chicago.

Amy R. Ward has been named the inaugural Rothman Family Professor. She has been a faculty member in Chicago’s Booth School of Business since July 2018.

Dr. Ward holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics with a computer science option from Claremont McKenna College in California. She earned a master’s degree in engineering-economic systems and operations research and a Ph.D. in management science and engineering both from Stanford University.

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is a national program run by the University of California for the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science. Dr. Yelick, a computer scientist and longtime UC Berkeley faculty member, will become the laboratory's next director on July 1.
