Four Women Academics Honored With Awards

Julie SchwarzJulie K. Schwarz, assistant professor of radiation oncology at Washington University in St. Louis, received the 2012 Michael Fry Research Award from the Radiation Research Society. The award is given to junior level scientists who have made significant contributions to the field of radiation research. She specializes in treatment for thyroid and gynecologic cancers.

Dr. Schwarz is a graduate of Duke University. She earned a medical degree and a Ph.D. in cell and molecular biology from Washington University.

HeineUlrike Heine, an assistant professor of architecture at Clemson University in South Carolina, has been selected to receive the 2013 New Faculty Teaching Award from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture and the American Institute of Architecture Students. She will receive the award in San Francisco in March.

Heine joined the Clemson faculty in 2007. She holds a master of science in architecture degree from Brandenburg Technical University in Cottbus, Germany.

FreemanNancy K. Freeman, an associate professor of early childhood education at the University of South Carolina, received the Pearson 2012 Outstanding Early Childhood Teacher Educator Award from the National Association of Early Childhood Teacher Educators.

Dr. Freeman is a graduate of St. Mary’s College in Indiana. She holds master’s and doctoral degrees in early childhood eduation from the University of South Carolina.

Prieto-PicMercedes M. Prieto, an adjunct professor in the paralegal program of the Legal Studies Institute at Florida International University, won a national teaching competition held by the American Association for Paralegal Education.

Prieto is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Miami and earned her juris doctorate at the University of Miami School of Law.

On July 15, she is slated to become the first woman president of Schenectady County Community College within the State University of New York System.
