Here is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.
Yale University received a $3.6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense to develop a new technology platform that will create molecules that can distinguish between healthy and diseased cells with a focus on breast cancer cells. The new platform may produce a new way to diagnosis breast cancer.
The University of Rhode Island received funding from the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Special Grant Program in the Chemical Sciences for a week-long chemistry camp for middle school girls in both 2013 and 2014. The camp will take place in April when the local public schools have spring break.
The program is under the director of Mindy Levine, an assistant professor of chemistry at the university. She stated, “I want to expose these students to female scientists in diverse careers to help combat the implicit stereotype that girls are not good at science.”
Dr. Levine holds a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. in chemistry from Columbia University.
