Two Foreign Women at American Universities Win Rhodes Scholarships

rhodes-thumbLate last month the Rhodes Trust announced the names of 32 American students who won scholarships for graduate study at Oxford University in England. Fifteen of the 32 American winners in 2012 are women. More on these women is available here.

In addition to these American women, there are at least two women attending American universities who won Rhodes Scholarship as citizens of another country.

Rhodes-Gardner-headshot_web-225x300Eleanor Gardner, a senior at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore was selected as the Rhodes Scholar from the island of Bermuda. Gardner is majoring in political science and philosophy at Johns Hopkins. She plans on studying for a master’s degree in politics at Oxford.

At Johns Hopkins, Gardner is captain of the swimming team and is a member of Bermuda’s national teams in swimming and sailing.

Ela NaegeleEla Naegele, a senior at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, is a member of the Rhodes Scholar contingent from the nation of Germany. Naegele is the fifth women with ties to Yale to win a Rhodes Scholarship this year.

Naegele is majoring in philosophy and history. Her research focuses on the Weimar Republic in Germany from the end of World War I to the Nazi takeover in 1933. At Oxford, she is planning to obtain a master’s degree in modern British and European history. She later hopes to return to the United States to attend law school.
