Emory University, the highly rated research institution in Atlanta, has announced four finalists to be its next provost. Two of the four candidates are women. All candidates will be visiting the Emory campus over the next several weeks for a series of interviews and public forums.
Claire Elizabeth Sterk is the Charles Howard Candler Professor of Public Health and acting provost at Emory. Dr. Sterk has been serving since 2005 as senior vice provost for academic planning and faculty development. She has served for five years as chair of the department of behavioral sciences and health education and is the former dean for research at Emory’s Rollins School of Public Health.
A native of The Netherlands, Dr. Sterk holds doctoral degrees in anthropology and sociology from the University of Utrecht and Erasmus University in Rotterdam, respectively.
Meredith Jung-En Woo is the Buckner W. Clay Dean of the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Virginia. She is also a professor of politics at the university. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Virginia, Dr. Woo taught at the University of Michigan and Northwestern University.
Dr. Woo is a magna cum laude graduate of Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. She holds two master’s degrees and a Ph.D. in political science from Columbia University.
