Two Women Scholars Share the Sara A. Whaley Book Prize

The National Women’s Studies Association has announced the winner of its 2012 Sara A. Whaley Prize for a book dealing with issues concerning women and labor. The winning book is Caring for America: Home Health Workers in the Shadow of the Welfare State. The prize is named for the founder of Rush Publishing, one of the first publishers to focus on feminist titles. Whaley was also the editor of the journal Women’s Studies Abstracts.

The winning book is authored by Eileen Boris, Hull Professor and chair of feminist studies at the University of California at Santa Barbara and Jennifer Klein, a professor of history at Yale University.

Commenting on the award, Professor Boris said, “Not only is it one of just a few book prizes awarded by the professional organization for the field of women, gender, and feminist studies, it shows that my peers have recognized how a feminist and racialized gender analysis can be expansive in allowing us to understand the big questions of our time.”
