Andrea Goldsmith Appointed President of Stony Brook University

Andrea Goldsmith has been named the seventh president of Stony Brook University. Her appointment is effective August 1.

Stony Brook University, an institution within the State University of New York System, enrolls nearly 26,000 undergraduate and 8,300 graduate students, according to the most recent federal data. Women represent half of the undergraduate population.

Dr. Goldsmith comes to Stony Brook from Princeton University, where she currently serves as dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science and the Arthur LeGrand Doty Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Earlier, she was the Stephen Harris Professor of Engineering and a professor of electrical engineering at Stanford University. She also has industry experience, previously serving as chief technical officer of Plume WiFi and of Quantenna, Inc. – both companies she founded.

As a scholar, Dr. Goldsmith studies information theory, communication theory, and signal processing, and their application to wireless communications, interconnected systems, and neuroscience. She an inventor on 29 patents and the author of three books, including Wireless Communications (Cambridge University Press, 2005).

Dr. Goldsmith received her bachelor’s degree in engineering mathematics, as well as her master’s degree and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.
