Boston College’s M. Brinton Lykes Wins Peace Practitioner Award

M. Brinton Lykes, professor of community-cultural psychology at Boston College has been selected to receive the Ignacio Martin-Baro Lifetime Peace Practitioner Award from the Society for the Study of Peace, Conflict, and Violence of the American Psychological Association. In conjunction with the award, Professor Lykes has been invited to address the annual convention of the American Psychological Association in Honolulu.

The award is given to a practitioner who “has partnered with community members to design and implement activities that raise awareness of human rights issues and result in greater community empowerment in peace building and social justice initiatives.” The award is named after a priest who was murdered in 1989 in the Jesuit residence of the University of Central America in San Salvador.

Professor Lykes also serves as associate director of the Center for Human Rights and International Justice at Boston College. She is a graduate of Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia. Dr. Lykes earned a master of divinity degree at Harvard Divinity School and a Ph.D. in community/social psychology at Boston College.
