University of San Francisco Selects Eileen Chia-Ching Fung as Provost

Eileen Chia-Chung Fung has been officially appointed provost and vice president of academic affairs at the University of San Francisco after serving as interim provost for the past year.

Dr. Fung has been with the University of San Francisco for over 26 years. She began her career with the university in 1997 as the James Irvine Dissertation Fellow. One year later, she was hired as a full-time faculty member in the department of English. She has held multiple leadership roles within the university including chair of the English department, director of the Asian American Pacific Studies program, and associate dean of arts and humanities. In 2019, Dr. Fung was named senior associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and was named dean of the college in 2022.

Throughout her tenure, Dr. Fung has made many contributions to the University of San Francisco. In 2018, she founded the university’s Honors College, serving as its associate dean, and later as its dean. She also helped the university earn its designation as a Minority Serving Institution, as winning its first Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions grant in 2023.

“I’m excited to begin this new chapter in my career at USF,” said Dr. Fung. “USF provides students with the skills to thrive in the 21st century, readies them for careers they enjoy, prepares them to engage meaningfully with the world, and nurtures the curious mindsets of lifelong learners. I’m inspired every day by the resilience and care in our campus community and all the big and small ways we lift up one another in support of our shared mission.”

Dr. Fung is a first-generation college graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles where she majored in English literature and minored in Asian American studies. She received her Ph.D. in medieval English literature from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
