Eight Women Scholars Who Have Been Assigned New Positions or Duties

Kathy Stein, a professor of English at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas, has been named the assistant dean of student success at the university. Dr. Stein previously served as the director of the Academic Center for Excellence at the university.

Dr. Stein holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, a master’s degree in professional writing and rhetoric, and a doctorate in educational leadership and administration, all from the University of Texas at El Paso.

Shana Kushner Gadarian has been appointed the incoming associate dean for research at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University in New York. A member of the school’s faculty since 2011, she is the Merle Goldberg Fabian Professor of Excellence in Citizenship and Critical Thinking. Dr. Gararian is the co-author of Pandemic Politics: The Deadly Toll of Partisanship in the Age of COVID (Princeton University Press, 2022).

Professor Gararian is a graduate of Rutgers University in New Jersey, where she majored in political science. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in politics from Princeton University.

Tomisha Brock was named director of bands and assistant professor of music at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina. In recent years, Brock has served as the director of bands at Clark Atlanta University and Elizabeth City State University and served as assistant director at Mississippi Valley State University.

Dr. Brock earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from Virginia State University and a master’s degree from Norfolk State University. She received her doctoral degree in music education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Clinical associate professor J. Anna Cabot is the new director of the Immigration Clinic at the University of Houston Law Center. Before joining the University of Houston Law Center, Cabot taught at the American University Washington College of Law and the University of Connecticut School of Law.

Professor Cabot is a graduate of Amherst College in Massachusetts where she majored in physics. She earned a juris doctorate at American University in Washington, D.C.

Amanda Awadey is a new assistant professor of economics at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts. Her research focuses on the intended and unintended impact of education reforms on human capital development and educational attainment.

Dr. Awadey is a graduate of the University of Ghana. She earned a Ph.D. in economics earlier this year at Columbia University.

Shauna A. Morimoto was appointed associate dean for faculty success for the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas. She is a professor and chair of the department of sociology and criminology. Her research interests include democracy and opportunity, institutional transformation, intersectionality, generational change, and social movements and social change.

Professor Morimoto holds a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Alison Doubleday, associate professor in the College of Dentistry at the University of Illinois Chicago, has agreed to serve as interim executive director of the Center for the Advancement of Teaching Excellence. Professor Doubleday has been a member of the College of Dentistry faculty since 2010 and holds an affiliate appointment in the department of anthropology in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Professor Doubleday currently serves as the director of faculty development for the College of Dentistry, a position she has held since 2020.

Dr. Doubleday is a graduate of James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, where she majored in anthropology. She holds master’s degrees in anthropology and anatomy education and a Ph.D. in anthropology from Indiana University.

Marla Miller, a professor of history at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, was given the added duties of associate dean for strategic initiatives for the College of Humanities & Fine Arts at the university. Dr. Miller joined the department of history faculty in 1999. She is a prize-winning historian of U.S. women, work, and material culture.

Professor Miller is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she majored in history. She holds a Ph.D. in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
