Jamila Bookwala Will Be the Next Provost at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania

Jamila Bookwala has been selected as the next provost at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania. Dr. Bookwala will take over her role in July 2023.

“During my campus visit, I was utterly impressed by the deep commitment to a liberal arts education shared by faculty and staff colleagues, students, and trustees,” said Dr. Bookwala. “It also became quickly evident that this is a community that fosters lifelong learning and values being inclusive and welcoming. I look forward to advancing Gettysburg College’s mission to provide an outstanding and consequential education, supporting the implementation of the college’s strategic plan, and helping promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging across campus.”

Gettysburg College is a liberal arts educational institution with enrollments of about 2,400 students. Women make up 51 percent of the student body, according to the most recent statistics available from the U. S. Department of Education.

Dr. Bookwala is the former dean of the faculty and currently is a professor of psychology at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. She also has served as dean of academic initiatives and dean of curriculum and research at Lafayette College. She joined the psychology department faculty in 2001 and has served as department chair.

Earlier in her career, Professor Bookwala taught at Pennsylvania State University, Drexel University in Philadelphia, and the University of Pittsburgh, She is co-editor of Reflections From Pioneering Women in Psychology (Cambridge University Press, 2022).

Dr. Bookwala is a graduate of the University of Bombay in India. She earned a master’s degree in psychology at the City University of New York and a master’s degree and a doctorate in social psychology from the University of Pittsburgh.
