New Assignments in Higher Education for Seven Women Faculty Members

Pearl Dowe, the Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Political Science and African American Studies at Emory University in Atlanta, has been given the added duties of vice provost for faculty affairs at the university. She was a faculty member and department chair at the University of Arkansas before joining Emory in 2019.

Professor Dowe is a graduate of Savannah State University in Georgia. She holds a master’s degree in political science from Georgia Southern University and a Ph.D. in political science from Howard University in Washington D.C.

Suzanne M. Darais has been appointed director of the James E. Faust Law Library at the University of Utah. She will also serve as associate dean of University Libraries and professor of law. She has been the associate director of the Faust Law Library for the past eight years.

Professor Darais is a graduate of the University of Utah, where she majored in political science. She holds a master of library science degree from the University of Washington and a juris doctorate from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

Sarah Kenehan was named executive director of the Gail and Francis Slattery Center for Ignatian Humanities at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania. She was a professor of philosophy and had served as department chair and director of women’s studies at Marywood University in Scranton. Dr. Kenehan is the co-editor of Climate Justice and Feasibility: Normative Theorizing, Feasibility Constraints, and Climate Action (Rowman and Littlefield International, 2021).

Professor Kenehan earned a bachelor’s degree in biology and philosophy from the University of Scranton, where she was a member of the cross country team. She earned a master’s degree from the University of Tennessee and a Ph.D. from the University of Graz in Austria.

Stephanie Ricker Schulte has been named an interim associate dean in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas. She has served as chair of the department of communication since 2020 and has been a faculty member with the Univerity of Arkansas for nearly 15 years. Professor Schulte is the author of Cached: Decoding the Internet in Global Popular Culture (New York University Press, 2013).

Dr. Schulte holds a bachelor’s degree in communication, German language and literature, and gender studies from the University of Arkansas. She earned a master’s degree in media and public affairs and a Ph.D. in American studies from George Washington University.

Chariklia Sotiriou-Leventis has been named chair of the chemistry department at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. Dr. Sotiriou-Leventis joined the university as an adjunct assistant professor in 1994. She was named an assistant professor in 1995, associate professor in 2001, and full professor in 2005.

Professor Sotiriou-Leventis earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Athens in Greece. She holds a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Michigan State University.

Chandice Haste-Jackson, an associate teaching professor in the department of human development and family science in the Falk College at Syracuse University in New York, has been given the added duties of associate dean in the Office of Student Services at the college.

Dr. Haste-Jackson earned a bachelor’s degree in cultural anthropology from Syracuse University. She holds a master’s degree in behavioral sciences from Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma, and a Ph.D. in child and family studies from Syracuse University.

Miriam Mara was appointed director of the School of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies in the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University. She joined the New College faculty in 2021 and has been with Arizona State since 2016. She is the author of Globalism and Gendering Cancer: Tracking the Trope of Oncogenic Women from the US to Kenya (Routledge, 2019).

Dr. Mara received a bachelor’s degree in international studies from Jacksonville University. She earned a master’s degree in English from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a Ph.D. in English from the University of New Mexico.
