Emily Brodsky, professor of Earth and planetary sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz, has received the 2022 Nemmers Prize in Earth Sciences, awarded by Northwestern University for achievement and work of lasting significance in the field of Earth sciences.
The prize recognizes Dr. Brodsky for her “fundamental, transdisciplinary contributions to understanding the physics of earthquake networks at all scales.” In addition to an award of $200,000, she will interact with Northwestern faculty and students through lectures, conferences, or seminars.
As an earthquake physicist, Professor Brodsky studies the mechanics underlying earthquakes, addressing questions about the processes that trigger earthquakes and the constraining forces and processes that occur inside a fault zone during slip. These studies require expertise in a variety of geoscience disciplines, including seismology, hydrogeology, structural geology, and rock mechanics.
Dr. Brodsky earned a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University in 1995 and Ph.D. in geophysics from the California Institute of Technology in 2001.
