Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education Honors University of North Dakota Scholar

Nicole Redvers, assistant professor in the department of family & community medicine and Indians Into Medicine program in the School of Medicine & Health Sciences at the University of North Dakota, is the winner of the 2021 Sustainability Award from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. The award recognizes outstanding scholarship in higher education.

Dr. Redvers was honored with the award in part for research she published in the journal Medical Teacher under the title “Indigenous perspectives on education for sustainable healthcare.” The paper discusses the urgent need in the health professions education community to prioritize environmentally sustainable healthcare practice, and argues that it must include and prioritize Indigenous voices and Indigenous knowledge systems.

“I am truly honored by AASHE’s recognition of our work advocating Indigenous voices from around the world on this important topic,” said Dr. Redvers. “Indigenous Nations have much to offer the world as we work towards greater health and wellness for individuals, communities, and the planet. As the winner of this award, I hope we can continue to amplify the work of Indigenous scholars in higher education working toward a sustainable future for us all.”

A member of the Deninu K’ue First Nation. Dr. Redvers has worked with various Indigenous patients and communities around the globe helping to bridge the gap between Indigenous traditional and modern medical systems. She is co-founder and chair of the Arctic Indigenous Wellness Foundation. Dr. Redvers joined the faculty at the University of North Dakota in 2019.

Dr. Redvers is a graduate of the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada. She holds a doctorate in naturopathic medicine from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto and a master of public health degree from Dartmouth College.
