Carnegie Mellon University Scholar Honored by the International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence

Fei Fang, the Leonardo Assistant Professor in the Institute for Software Research in the School of Computer science at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, was recently recognized by the International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence for significant research in AI. Dr. Fang won the 2021 Computers and Thought Award for her contributions to integrating machine learning with game theory to tackle societal challenges.

Dr. Fang’s research uses game theory and machine learning to handle real-world challenges such as security, environmental sustainability, food security, and mobility. Her work has helped rangers and local communities combat poaching and to reduce food insecurity. Since 2013, her research has been used by the U.S. Coast to protect the Staten Island Ferry in New York City.

Before joining the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Fang was a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Research on Computation and Society at Harvard University.

Dr. Fange earned a bachelor’s degree in electronic engineering at Tsinghua University in China. She holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Southern California.
