Cesarina Thompson was appointed dean of the School of Health Sciences at American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts. Her appointment is effective on July 1. She has been serving as interim associate dean of the School of Health and Human Services and professor of nursing at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven.
Dr. Thompson is a graduate of the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut. She holds master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Connecticut.
Julie Candler Hayes was named dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She has served on the university’s faculty since 2006. Previously, she taught at the University of Kentucky and the University of Richmond.
Dr. Hayes is a graduate of Austin College in Texas. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in French literature from Northwestern University.
Paula D. McClain was named dean of the Graduate School and vice provost for graduate education at Duke University. She is a professor of political science at Duke and is the former chair of the university’s Academic Council. She joined the Duke faculty in 2000. Previously, Professor McClain taught at the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee, Arizona State University, and the University of Virginia.
She will be the first African American to serve as a dean of one of Duke’s schools.
Professor McClain holds bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. degrees in political science, all from Howard University in Washington, D.C.
Nancy Bauer was appointed dean of academic affairs in the School of Arts and Sciences at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. Dr. Bauer is an associate professor of philosophy at the university and first joined the Tufts faculty in 1998.
Dr. Bauer is a graduate of Harvard University. She holds a master’s degree from Harvard Divinity School and a Ph.D. in philosophy from Harvard University.
Dr. Scarlatta has led the University of Michigan-Dearbon on an interim basis for the past year. Pending approval from the board of regents, she is slated to become the university's permanent leader on May 22.
Nicole Reaves has been serving as executive vice president and chief programs officer at Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh, North Carolina. On July 15, she is slated to become the first woman president of Schenectady County Community College within the State University of New York System.
Dr. Bear, a longtime leader and advocate for international public health, is the new leader of Jhpiego, a Johns Hopkins University-affiliated global health organization dedicated to improving the health and lives of women and families around the world.
Dr. Fleuriet comes to her new role from the University of Texas at San Antonio, where she has been serving as vice provost for honors education and a professor of anthropology.
Dr. Burris has served as provost of Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, North Carolina for the past four years. She is slated to become the next president of SUNY's Buffalo State University on July 1.
