Four Women Scholars Who Have Been Appointed to Endowed Faculty Positions

Mildred C. Joyner is the inaugural John E. & Barbara S. Jacob Distinguished Endowed Professor in the School of Social Work at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Dr. Joyner served on the faculty at West Chester University in Pennsylvania, retiring in 2011. She has been serving as president of the National Association of Social Workers, which has 55 chapters throughout the United States and its territories.

Professor Joyner is a graduate of Central State University in Ohio. She earned a master of social work degree at Howard University and a doctor of public service degree from West Chester University.

Karen Barkey was appointed to the Charles Theodore Kellogg and Bertie K. Hawver Kellogg Chair of Sociology and Religion at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. She has been serving as the Haas Distinguished Chair of Religious Diversity at the Othering & Belonging Institute, the director of the Center for the Study of Democracy, Toleration, and Religion, the co-director of the Berkeley Center for the Study of Religion and professor of sociology at the University of California, Berkeley.

A native of Istanbul, Turkey, she moved to the United States for her college education. She earned a bachelor’s degree at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, a master’s degree from the University of Washington, and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.

Melissa R. Kaufman, professor of urology and chief of the Division of Reconstructive Urology and Pelvic Health at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, will be the inaugural holder of this new Patricia and Rodes Hart Chair in Urologic Surgery. Dr. Kaufman joined the faculty at Vanderbilt University in 2009.

Dr. Kaufman earned her undergraduate degree at Washington University in St. Louis. She holds a Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology from the University of Tennessee and a medical degree from the University of Arkansas College of Medicine.

Juliet M. Brodie has been named the Peter E. Haas Faculty Director of the Haas Center for Public Service at Stanford University. Professor Brodie, who directs the Stanford Community Law Clinic, has been a member of the Stanford faculty since 2006. Earlier, she was an associate clinical professor at the University of Wisconsin Law School and a clinical assistant professor at the University of Michigan Law School.

Professor Brodie is a graduate of Brown University in Providence Rhode Island. She earned a juris doctorate at Harvard Law School.
