Legendary Coach Pat Summitt to Step Down

The University of Tennessee has announced that Pat Summitt will step down as head women’s basketball coach. Coach Summitt announced last year that she was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease but continued to lead the team through the recently completed season when the University of Tennessee posted a record of 27-9 and reached the Elite Eight in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.

Summitt was named Head Coach Emeritus, which will enable her to continue to participate in the basketball program as her health permits.

Summit led the Lady Vols basketball team for 38 years compiling an astounding record of 1,098 wins against only 208 losses. She has won more games as a college basketball coach than anyone else, male or female. She coached in 13 national championship games, winning eight times.

  1. I am a girls basketball coach, and I watched Coach Summitt’s teams every chance I got. THE greatest coach in the history of women’s basketball. She will be missed.
