Princeton University Announces the Hiring of Five Women to Its Faculty

Princeton University in New Jersey recently announced that it has appointed 16 new scholars to its faculty. Five of the new hires are women.

Laura Edwards was appointed professor of history. She specializes in legal history. She was a full professor at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, where she has taught since 2001. Earlier, Professor Edwards was on the faculty of the University of California, Los Angeles from 1997-2001, and the University of South Florida from 1993-97. Dr. Edwards is the author of four books on the legal history of the American South, including The People and Their Peace: Legal Culture and the Transformation of Inequality in the Post-Revolutionary South (University of North Carolina Press, 2009).

Professor Edwards is a graduate of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Michelle Chan is a new assistant in molecular biology and at the Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics.

Dr. Chan is a graduate of the University of British Columbia in Canada and holds a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Adji Bousso Dieng will join the Princeton faculty next fall as an assistant professor of computer science. She is an expert in artificial intelligence and has been working as a research scientist at Google.

Dr. Dieng is a graduate of Télécom Paris. She earned a master’s degree in applied statistics at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and a Ph.D. in statistics from Columbia University in New York City. Before seeking her Ph.D., Dr. Dieng was a junior professional associate at the World Bank.

Yasaman Ghasempour will join the Princeton faculty for the spring 2021 semester as an assistant professor of electrical engineering. Her research focuses on computing and networking.

Dr. Ghasempour is a graduate of the Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, Iran. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from Rice University in Houston, Texas.

Yunqing Tang will join the tenure-track faculty for the spring semester as an assistant professor of mathematics. She has been a mathematics instructor at the university since 2017. A specialist in number theory, Dr. Tang was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton for the 2016-17 academic year.

Dr. Tang is a graduate of Peking University in China. She earned a Ph.D. in mathematics at Harvard University.
