In Memoriam: Marguerite Elsa Ballon Nadien, 1930-2020

Margot Nadien, a former professor of psychology at the New York City campus of Fordham University, died on July 3 n New York City. She was 90 years old and had suffered from cancer.

A native of Canada, Nadien’s father was a professor of surgery at McGill University in Montreal. She came to the United States as a teenager to study piano. After teaching music for many years, Nadien earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology at Hunter College in New York at the age of 37. She was class valedictorian. She went on to earn a Ph.D. in psychology at Graduate Centro of the City University of New York.

After teaching as an adjunct professor, Dr. Nadien joined the full-time faculty at Fordham in 1974. In 1981, she became the first psychologist in the division of social sciences at the Lincoln Center campus to achieve tenure. Dr. Nadien served as the director of its Gerontology Certificate Program. In 2013, Joseph M. McShane, president of Fordham, saluted Dr. Nadien with the Bene Merenti Award for 40 years of service to the university. She retired from teaching n 2015.
