The board of trustees of Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake, Washington, has selected Sara Thompson Tweedy as the tenth president of the college in a unanimous decision. When she takes office in July, she will be the first woman to lead the college.
Big Bend Community College enrolls just over 2,000 students according to the most recent U.S. Department of Education data. Women make up 53 percent of the student body.
“I am honored and humbled to be selected as the next president of Big Bend Community College,” Dr. Thompson Tweedy said. “During the selection process, the commitment of the faculty and staff to the students of Big Bend was genuine and compelling. I am excited to begin working with the faculty, staff, and trustees to further the mission of the college and serve students.”
Dr. Thompson Tweedy currently serves as the vice president of student access, involvement, and success at Westchester Community College in Valhalla, New York. She has held leadership positions at the State University of New York system over the past nine years.
Dr. Thompson Tweedy earned her bachelor’s degree in religion at what is now Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia. She earned a master of divinity degree at Yale University and a doctorate in community college policy and administration from the University of Maryland.
