Eight Women Faculty at Major Universities Who Are Taking on New Duties

J. Camille Hall was promoted to professor in the College of Social Work at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She is the first African American woman to hold this rank in the college. She joined the faculty at the university in 2004 and was promoted to associate professor in 2010.

Dr. Hall earned a bachelor’s degree and a master of social work degree at New Mexico State University. She holds a Ph.D. in social work practice from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts.

Ashley Bohrer is a new assistant professor of gender and peace studies in the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. She also is a concurrent faculty member in Notre Dame’s gender studies program. Dr. Bohrer has been serving as a postdoctoral fellow at Hamilton College in New York.

Dr. Bohrer earned a Ph.D. in philosophy at DePaul University in Chicago. She is the author of the forthcoming book Marxism and Intersectionality: Race, Gender, Class, and Sexuality under Contemporary Capitalism.

Sarah Edwards, the Hollie Bethel Professor and chair of the teacher education department at the University of Nebraska-Omaha was recently named to the newly-created position of assistant vice chancellor for curriculum and programs at the university. Dr. Edwards joined the faculty at the university in 2001.

Professor Edwards is a graduate of Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. She earned a master’s degree from Friends University in Wichita, Kansas, and a Ph.D. in teaching and teaching education from the University of Arizona.

Rebecca Mark was appointed professor of women’s and gender studies a Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. She will also be the director of the Institute for Women’s Leadership at the university. Professor Mark has been serving as chair of the English department and professor of American literature at Tulane University in New Orleans.

Professor Mark is the author of Ersatz America: Hidden Traces, Graphic Texts, and Mending of Democracy (University of Virginia Press, 2014).

For the next two years, Tanya Karwaki will teach and mentor law students and conduct legal research in health care issues as the first Health Law Fellow at the West Virginia University College of Law. Professor Karwaki comes to West Virginia University from the University of Washington, where she taught in the school of law and in the pharmacy program.

Professor Karwaki holds a bachelor’s degree, two law degrees, and a Ph.D. from the University of Washington. She also earned a master’s degree at the University of California, Davis.

Brea Perry was appointed associate vice provost for the social sciences in the Office of the Vice Provost for Research at Indiana University at Bloomington. She will begin her new duties in January. Dr. Perry is a professor of sociology in the College of Arts and Sciences at the university.

Professor Perry joined the faculty in 2014 after teaching at the University of Kentucky. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in sociology from Indiana University.

Dipti Nayak is a new assistant professor in the department of molecular and cell biology at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Nayak studies methanogenic and methanotrophic archaea, the primary producers and consumers of methane.

Dr. Nayak holds a master’s degree in environmental engineering from Stanford University. She earned a Ph.D. in evolutionary biology from Harvard University.

Cindy A. Brantmeier, professor of applied linguistics and education at Washington University in St. Louis has been selected to serve as the first faculty fellow in international research at the university. In this new role, she will advise faculty on conducting international research and achieving effective collaborations with international partners that are compliant with university policies and regulatory requirements and procedures.

Dr. Brantmeier has taught at the university for 20 years. She holds a Ph.D. from Indiana University.
