Five Universities Appoint Women to Dean Positions

April Barton has been named dean of the School of Law at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. She currently serves as associate dean for academic affairs at the Charles Widger School of Law at Villanova University in suburban Philadelphia.

Professor Barton is a cum laude graduate of Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where she majored in physics. She holds a law degree from Villanova University.

Carol Anne Murdoch-Kinch has been named the first woman dean of the Indiana University School of Dentistry at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. She was associate dean for academic affairs and the Dr. Walter H. Swartz Professor of Integrated Special Care Dentistry at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry.

Dr. Murdoch-Kinch holds a doctor of dental surgery degree from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and a Ph.D. in dental science from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

Bethany Nowviskie has been named dean of libraries at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. She currently serves as distinguished presidential fellow at the Council on Library and Information Resources and as director of the Digital Library Foundation.

Dr. Nowviskie holds a master’s degree in education from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and a Ph.D. in literature with a concentration in bibliography and humanities computing from the University of Virginia.

Sherri Jones has been named dean of the College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She currently serves as a professor and chair of the department of special education and communication disorders at the university.

Dr. Jones holds a bachelor’s degree in speech pathology and audiology, a master’s degree in audiology, and a Ph.D. in psychological and cultural studies with an emphasis on audiology and hearing science all from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Maria Donoghue Velleca has been named the Herbert J. and Ann L. Siegel Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Lehigh University in Bethlehem University. She currently serves as senior associate dean for faculty affairs and strategic planning at Georgetown College in Kentucky.

Dr. Velleca is a graduate of Boston College. She holds a Ph.D. in molecular and cellular biology from Washington University in St. Louis.
